Party with a PURPOSE
Fred and his dad
pup cakes

Dear Dogs for the Deaf,

Back in 1997, my husband saw a public service ad for DFD in a medical journal. Since then, we have been sending recycled Christmas cards to benefit DFD. The money we save on cards and postage increases our donation to DFD. The cards are printed with information about DFD, and the website is included. My husband’s co-workers are involved in collecting cards for us to recycle.

The April 2007 issue of FAMILY CIRCLE magazine featured Pup Cakes on the cover We planned to make them for our son's first birthday and decided to have a "Party with a Purpose" to generate awareness about and benefit DFD. The invitation (from our dogs) invited guests to Fred's 7th (in dog years) birthday party. We asked our guests that, instead of gifts for the baby, they bring items for DFD from your Wish List. The response was amazing! We served Bone Cookies, Pup Cakes, and all of our guests took home goodie bags with information about DFD. The kids colored pictures for you.

Everyone had a great time and they were really excited about giving to DFD.

I am going to send information to FAMILY CIRCLE, and hopefully they will print something about the party. Please send me information on the new autism dog program and anything you would like me to highlight in the letter to them. I will also suggest they contact you directly for details.

In this box are all the gifts from our guests and the pictures! Keep up the good work!

Doggie quilts made with love

Julia R. with husband Ken and their dogs, Maggie and Abby

Whenever a friend got a new puppy or kitten, Julia R. of Washington State made a quilt for the new family member. “Little puppies and kitties need their own things,” she says.

Julia and her husband are Good Sam Club members, and in 2005 Julia read about Dogs for the Deaf in a Good Sam newsletter. After reading the article, Julia decided she would make quilts for the dogs at DFD who were going out to their new homes. Hearing Dogs, the Dogs for Seniors, and Special Needs Dogs all receive one of Julia’s special quilts before placement. “I do it for the dogs - to make their lives easier. It smells like where they’ve been and is something familiar for the dogs to take with them.”

Julia started making the quilts for our dogs in late 2005. She made 37 that year. In 2006 she made 78. So far this year she has made 43 quilts and 14 pillows. She says making the quilts is a form of therapy for her and is fun to do.

Being in the DFD office when the big box of quilts is opened is a real treat for our staff. Each soft and colorful blanket that Julia makes is obviously a labor of love.

At an after-Thanksgiving sale, Julia stocks up on flannel for the quilts. She often hands out the Dogs for the Deaf brochure at the fabric store. The employees of the fabric store have gotten to know her and often let Julia know when there is dog or animal themed fabric available that would make a good quilt.

DFD, the Hearing Dog recipients, and especially the dogs themselves appreciate all of Julia’s hard work and creativity.
