Our Dogs:   Harmony's Hounds - Dogs with Special Needs

Harmony

Harmony's Hounds

Periodically special dogs come to Dogs for the Deaf, dogs who have big hearts and lots of love to give but who also have challenges to overcome. These dogs are looking for homes with people who have the time, home environment, and means necessary to provide the love and care they need to live happy and fulfilling lives.

Harmony was one such special dog. A spunky little Boston Terrier, Harmony came back to DFD when her Hearing Dog recipient could no longer provide an adequate home for her. A thorough veterinary health check resulted in Harmony being diagnosed with mast cell tumors. These were surgically removed; however, because it is not possible to know when or if the tumors will return, she could not be placed again as a Hearing Dog. Thus began the search for someone willing to provide a home for a dog who must live with an uncertain future and willing to commit to meeting any possible medical needs she might have.

Tony and Donna of California had read about Harmony in the Canine Listener and were interested in adopting her. Once they met, it was love at first sight. They took Harmony into their home and their hearts and have regularly sent us pictures and letters telling us about their adventures and how she has brightened their lives. Harmony is thriving in her new home, and Tony and Donna couldn't be happier with this new addition to their family.

Because this happy outcome is our wish for every dog with medical issues or other special needs that we are looking to find a home for, we have decided to call these special dogs "Harmony's Hounds."

Harmony's Hounds (Dogs with Special Needs) - dogs who have a special physical or emotional need and are looking for someone willing to provide a stable, loving home and any special care they might need with things like on-going medical concerns, old age, anxiety issues, allergies, and seizures. In the right, special environment, these dogs can thrive and provide lots of love.

Sasha Needs a Forever Home…

Sasha is a sweet, sensitive, 4 year old girl who will make somebody a fabulous companion. She is a lot of dog with a lot of love to give who enjoys playing ball and going for long walks. Sasha is friendly and good with people. She enjoys riding in the car and travels very well. As you will see in the video below, Sasha will always, always accommodate your need to rub a dog belly, and she can pour so much love out of her big brown eyes that your heart will melt a hundred times a day.

This beautiful dog’s best qualities didn’t always have a place to shine, as they do now. She came to us from a shelter in Hawaii. She wasn’t quite right for our Hearing Dog program due to sound sensitivity but had the makings of a fabulous companion. We placed her as a Career Change Dog, and she was with the family for three years. Their circumstances changed and they asked us to find Sasha a new home. We are dedicated to life long care of all the dogs we place, so we welcomed Sasha back.

Sasha falls into the Harmony’s Hounds (Dogs with Special Needs) category because she has some anxiety issues. In the right home environment, Sasha’s anxiety issues are relatively easy to manage. A calm, consistent, predictable routine works wonders for her. Sasha’s anxiety appears most frequently in response to loud and/or unpredictable sounds, and changes in environment and routine. She loves children, but living in an environment with children would be too much for her to handle. If Sasha is stressed or confused, her behavior will deteriorate and she will attempt to escape the situation, and may become somewhat possessive with her toys and treats. With a calm, predictable environment, consistent, loving, reward bases guidance, Sasha will gladly cooperate with the house rules.

One of Sasha’s favorite hobbies is testing limits; she cooperates nicely when boundaries are consistently and gently kept. She would do well in a home that has a fenced yard, with no cats or other small furry critters, and possibly another dog her size or larger if it’s the right match. Sasha has fantastic house manners and knows the commands “sit” and “down.” She needs a home where she will be left inside when she is alone.

We love Sasha at DFD and she loves us, but more than anything she would love another home. Sasha is a lot of dog with a lot of love to give. If you would like to meet Sasha and maybe take her home to love forever, please call (541) 826-9220 or email.
